L.J. – A life transformed for this Marine Corps veteran

After three years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, L.J. faced a daunting challenge-transitioning back to civilian life. He found himself in a cycle of low-paying jobs and unable to save for his future.

With his health failing and unable to work, he was forced into retirement and became very worried about how he would get by on his Social Security benefits alone without any savings in the bank.

Earlier this year, L.J. was connected with the Americans Helping Americans® Veterans Housing Support (VHS) program.

Over the course of just one week, he was accepted into the program, which provided him with a single-unit affordable apartment. VHS also helped him with furniture and food assistance, further alleviating his financial woes.

Once he was settled in, the VHS Program Manager connected him to his local Vet Center to assist him with securing low-stress part-time employment, mental health counseling, and even yoga classes.
The impact that the VHS program has made on the life of this Marine Corps veteran has been transformational.

Today, L.J. reports that since joining the program, a tremendous burden has been lifted from his shoulders and he has all he needs: an affordable home, food security, and access to services he needs to thrive—all in a community that he loves!
